Canadian medical regulators have found 428 instances where doctors violated the rules of the country’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program to kill their patients. Not a single one of the 428 murders has been referred for criminal investigation. It’s just the latest scandal to rock one of the most brazenly awful doctor-assisted suicide programs in the world.
The Ontario Office of the Coroner identified all the cases in which MAiD regulatory violations took place so doctors could kill their patients. The regulators say many of the patients were killed despite not being able to give proper consent.
For example, dozens of adults with autism were euthanized after describing feelings of loneliness. In case it needs to be said, that’s not an example of a life-threatening illness that a person will die from. Loneliness sucks, but it’s not a valid reason for a doctor to poison someone to death.
When MAiD was first introduced in 2016 in Canada, it was only supposed to apply to terminally ill patients in extreme pain. This is how doctor-assisted suicide is always sold to the public—as an act of compassion.
Under Justin Trudeau’s leadership, MAiD was amended in 2021. Doctors can now kill patients for things like being poor, suffering hearing loss, or being injured by the COVID vaccines. Even with those looser guidelines, regulators say that as many as 61% of MAiD clinicians have broken the rules when it comes to killing patients. That includes about 25% of all doctors in the city of Toronto.
Canadian doctors euthanize an average of 36 people every day in the MAiD program. Doctor-assisted suicide is now the sixth leading cause of death in Canada. None of the doctors who violate the rules to kill their patients have ever been prosecuted.
