Democrats in Nebraska have cooked up a scheme so transparently dishonest that you’d think they’d at least be embarrassed about it. They’re not. They’re doing it out loud, in public, with receipts — because apparently the Nebraska Democratic Party thinks voters are too stupid to notice a shell game happening right in front of their faces.
The plan? Run a “spoiler” candidate in the Democratic primary who will immediately drop out if she wins, clearing the field for an “independent” candidate who is absolutely, positively, 100% a Democrat in disguise. Subtle!
Here’s how the grift works. Dan Osborn is running for the U.S. Senate in Nebraska as an “independent.” On paper, he’s not affiliated with either party. In reality, the entire Nebraska Democratic Party apparatus is propping him up like a puppet on strings. Nebraska’s Democratic Party Chair Jane Kleeb has publicly endorsed Osborn — while simultaneously encouraging Democratic primary voters to nominate a woman named Cindy Burbank to the Democratic ticket.
Why would Kleeb want Democrats to vote for Burbank in the primary? Because Burbank has stated — on her own company website, no less — that she will drop out if she wins the Democratic nomination “to give her partner a fair shot against Ricketts.”
Her partner. She literally called Osborn her “partner.” They’re not even pretending these are independent operations.
(We’d call this a conspiracy but conspiracies usually require, you know, secrecy.)
So the play is crystal clear: Burbank wins the Democratic primary, then immediately withdraws. With no Democrat on the general election ballot, Democratic voters have only one place to go — straight to “Independent” Dan Osborn, who is running against Republican Senator Pete Ricketts. The Democratic Party gets their candidate into the Senate without the inconvenience of having the word “Democrat” next to his name on the ballot.
Because here’s the thing they’ll never admit: the Democrat brand is toxic in Nebraska. They know it. We know it. Everybody knows it. Nebraska voters would sooner elect a fence post with an R next to its name than vote for anyone with a D. So instead of doing the hard work of, say, not being insane on policy, Democrats decided to just… change the label.
Same product. New packaging. “Now with 100% less visible Democrat!”
Osborn himself has been in on the coordination from the start. He posted on social media urging Democratic primary voters to support Burbank. Think about that for a second — an “independent” candidate is telling voters of a specific party which candidate to pick in that party’s primary. If he’s truly independent, why does he care who wins the Democratic nomination? Why is he coordinating messaging with the Democratic Party chair?
Because he’s not independent. He’s a Democrat who can’t win as a Democrat.
Republicans have already challenged Burbank’s candidacy in court, arguing — correctly — that she’s not running in good faith. She’s not trying to win the nomination and serve. She’s trying to win the nomination and immediately forfeit it. That’s not a candidacy. That’s a tactical withdrawal disguised as a campaign.
This is what the Democratic Party has been reduced to in red states. They can’t compete on ideas because their ideas are garbage. They can’t run on their record because their record is a disaster. So they resort to tricks, shell games, and ballot manipulation — anything to sneak one of their people into office without voters realizing who they’re actually voting for.
And the media — bless their hearts — will report this with a straight face. “Independent candidate Dan Osborn surges in Nebraska Senate race!” No mention of the coordinated scheme. No mention of the spoiler candidate. No mention of the party chair pulling strings. Just a heartwarming story about a brave independent taking on the establishment.
Nebraska voters aren’t that dumb. They can smell a rat wearing an independent costume from a mile away. Dan Osborn can call himself whatever he wants — independent, moderate, libertarian, astronaut — it doesn’t change the fact that the entire Democratic Party machine is behind him, and the only reason he’s not running as a Democrat is because Democrats can’t win in Nebraska.
If your ideas were popular, you wouldn’t need to hide the party label. Period.
