President Donald Trump reportedly issued a blunt, explosive threat to Russian President Vladimir Putin during a private donor gathering in 2024, telling the Russian leader he would “bomb the s**t out of Moscow” if Russia invaded Ukraine, according to CNN’s review of leaked fundraiser audio.
“With Putin I said, ‘If you go into Ukraine, I’m going to bomb the s**t out of Moscow. I’m telling you I have no choice,’” Trump told wealthy donors, revealing the raw, unfiltered side of his foreign policy strategy behind closed doors as he made the case for a second term.
The tapes, captured at 2024 fundraisers in New York and Florida and detailed in the new book “2024” by Josh Dawsey, Tyler Pager, and Isaac Arnsdorf, have not previously aired. They show Trump describing a similar warning to Chinese dictator Xi Jinping regarding Taiwan, as the former president made clear he was willing to use force to deter aggression by America’s adversaries.
The Trump campaign declined to comment on the recordings, which also reportedly capture Trump discussing his intent to deport student protesters and bluntly saying “the welfare people” will always vote Democrat.
Russian state news agency Tass reported that Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, denied any phone call at that time, claiming it was “the period when Trump was not yet the president of the United States.” However, Trump’s comments align with his repeated claims that his administration’s unpredictability and hardline posture kept adversaries in check.
Trump has recently expressed disappointment in Putin, telling rallygoers in Iowa he had a “very disappointing” conversation with the Russian leader and doesn’t believe Putin is looking to end the war in Ukraine.
“I don’t think he’s looking to stop,” Trump said.
The newly revealed remarks highlight the contrast between Trump’s fiery private posture and his public positioning, revealing the calculated bluntness he claims kept the world stable during his first term. They also add a new layer to Trump’s claims that he could swiftly end the war in Ukraine if returned to office, using the threat of overwhelming force to deter Putin from further aggression.
For now, the tapes are making waves, giving voters a glimpse of Trump’s willingness to flex American power behind closed doors — and offering a preview of the foreign policy posture he would bring back to the White House if reelected in 2028.
